The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today that 11 distinct scientific and technical investigations have been launched for the 2017 Oscars.
These investigations are made public so individuals and companies with devices or claims of innovation within these areas will have the opportunity to submit achievements for review.
The deadline to submit additional entries is Tuesday, August 15, at 5 p.m. PT. The Academy’s Scientific and Technical Awards Committee has started investigations into the following areas:
THE ACADEMY ANNOUNCES 2017 FILM SCHOLARS GRANT RECIPIENTS

Dr. Ross Melnick and Dr. James Tweedie have been named 2017 Academy Film Scholars by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Their respective book projects focus on Hollywood’s foreign ownership and operation of movie theaters and the history and theory of Hollywood production design. The Academy’s Grants Committee will award Melnick and Tweedie each a $25,000 Film Scholars grant on the basis of their proposals.
THE ACADEMY OF MOTION PICTURE ARTS AND SCIENCES ANNOUNCES YEAR-LONG RESIDENCY AT METROGRAPH THEATER NEW YORK

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today a yearlong residency at Metrograph Theaters in New York City, beginning July 24, that will showcase high quality film prints from the Academy Film Archive, home to one of the most diverse and extensive motion picture collections in the world. The monthly series will feature onstage conversations with filmmakers and scholars of motion pictures, tributes, newsreels, rarely seen clips from past Oscar® ceremonies, and home movies from Hollywood legends and some of the most influential filmmakers and artists.

THE ACADEMY CELEBRATES FILMMAKER RICHARD DONNER

The Academy will pay tribute to director-producer Richard Donner with an evening of personal anecdotes, film clips spanning his prolific career and special appearances by friends and colleagues on Wednesday, June 7, at 7:30 p.m. at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.
IN THE MOOD FOR "LOVE JONES"– THE ACADEMY CELEBRATES THE FILM'S 20TH ANNIVERSARY

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will host a special screening of director Theodore Witcher's "love jones" on Tuesday, June 13, at 7:30 p.m. at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. The evening will reunite stars Nia Long, Larenz Tate and Isaiah Washington, and feature a panel discussion with Witcher and others.
THE 90th OSCARS® REUNITES HOST JIMMY KIMMEL, AND PRODUCERS MICHAEL DE LUCA AND JENNIFER TODD FOR HOLLYWOOD’S MOST CELEBRATED EVENT OF THE YEAR

For a second consecutive year, late-night talk show favorite Jimmy Kimmel will return to host the Oscars® telecast and Michael De Luca and Jennifer Todd will produce, Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs announced today. The 90th Academy Awards® will air live on the ABC Television Network and broadcast outlets worldwide on Oscar® Sunday, March 4, 2018.
