The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voted Tuesday night (September 5) to present Honorary Awards to writer-director Charles Burnett, cinematographer Owen Roizman, actor Donald Sutherland and director Agnès Varda.  The four Oscar® statuettes will be presented at the Academy’s 9th Annual Governors Awards on Saturday, November 11, at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland Center®.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today published its list of upcoming submission deadlines for 90th Academy Awards® consideration.

Submissions for individual categories and the General Entry/Official Screen Credits (OSC) form are due by 5 p.m. PT on the following dates:

Documentary Short Subject -  Friday, September 1

Documentary Feature - Wednesday, September 20

Animated Short Film -  Monday, October 2

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will host James Naremore for its 15th Film Scholars Lecture on Thursday, September 7, at 7:30 pm, at the Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood. Naremore will discuss his forthcoming book focused on Charles Burnett, a renowned African-American filmmaker and key figure in the "L.A. Rebellion," titled, Charles Burnett: A Cinema of Symbolic Knowledge.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today that 11 distinct scientific and technical investigations have been launched for the 2017 Oscars.

These investigations are made public so individuals and companies with devices or claims of innovation within these areas will have the opportunity to submit achievements for review.

The deadline to submit additional entries is Tuesday, August 15, at 5 p.m. PT.  The Academy’s Scientific and Technical Awards Committee has started investigations into the following areas:

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will celebrate the women who have been at the forefront of film animation with "An Invisible History: Trailblazing Women of Animation," on Monday, August 7, at 7:30 p.m. at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

Dr. Ross Melnick and Dr. James Tweedie have been named 2017 Academy Film Scholars by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.  Their respective book projects focus on Hollywood’s foreign ownership and operation of movie theaters and the history and theory of Hollywood production design.  The Academy’s Grants Committee will award Melnick and Tweedie each a $25,000 Film Scholars grant on the basis of their proposals.
