Actors Zoey Deutch, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Rodrigo Santoro and Vince Vaughn will perform a live reading of selected scenes from this year’s five winning scripts at the 2017 Academy Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting Awards Presentation & Live Read on Thursday, November 2, at 7:30 p.m. at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. Effie Brown (“Dear White People”) returns to produce, and Rodrigo Garcia (“Mother and Child”) returns to direct for the fifth consecutive year.

ACADEMY REVEALS NICHOLL SCREENWRITING SHORTLIST

Eleven individual screenwriters and one writing team have been shortlisted for the 2016 Academy Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting.  The Academy Nicholl Fellowships Committee will meet later this month to select up to five winners to receive year-long fellowships.  A total of 6,915 scripts were submitted for this year’s competition.

Five individuals have been selected as winners of the 2015 Academy Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting competition.  The Academy is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the global competition which aims to identify and encourage talented new screenwriters.  Each winner will receive a $35,000 prize, the first installment of which will be distributed at an awards presentation on Wednesday, November 4, at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.  For the third consecutive year, the event also will include a live read of selected scenes from the fellows’ winning scripts. .

An all-star group of Hollywood moviemakers huddled around a speakerphone in the Academy’s headquarters on an impossibly sunny day, poised to change the lives of several people around the world.

"Is this Sallie?,” asked Robin Swicord, who wrote the screenplay for such films as Little Women and Matilda

"Yes it is,” aspiring screenwriter Sallie West, author of  Moonflower, replied, voice rising, from her home in Charleston, South Carolina.
