Congratulations and welcome to the Academy Gold Program! You are about to embark on an unforgettable summer learning the ins and outs of the film industry. Read on for a few things you need to know before you get started.
Orientation: These two days are packed with panels, tours and social events to kick off Academy Gold, and attendance is mandatory. We look forward to seeing you all on June 21 and 22 at the Pickford Center for Motion Picture Study, home to the Academy Film Archive located at 1313 Vine Street in Hollywood. More detailed information will be sent to you about this in the coming weeks, so watch your inbox.
Security ID Photo Specifications: To create your Gold ID badge, we ask that you send a current photo using the outlined specifications no later than June 1. This ID will allow you to access all your Gold Program events, tours and screenings. We are also creating and distributing a directory of 2018 Gold participants to help you get to know each other and communicate with one another. If you DO want your security photo to be included in the directory, please let us know in writing.
Pre-Orientation Events: Before the official launch, we invite you to attend The Sherman Brothers: A Hollywood Songbook on June 20. Each program will feature cast and crew onstage for a great conversation not to be missed. If you are able to join us, please RSVP with your name and the event(s) you plan to attend.
Required Reading: Before you arrive at orientation, please read Carole Kirschner's HOLLYWOOD GAME PLAN. You can download the e-book here.
Social Media: A key to your success in the Gold Program is networking. In that spirit, we’d like to invite you to our closed Facebook group, Academy Gold Facebook Group 2018, and follow our main accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat. This is where you can connect with fellow Gold interns and get updates from the Academy Gold team. We will be celebrating and sharing your experience this summer through photos and videos online. In the coming days you will also receive a particpant release. Please review it and return a signed copy to our team by June 13.
Weekly Panels: Every Wednesday at 6:30 pm, we’ll host a reception followed by a 7:30 pm panel of artists, professionals and Academy members for a discussion on a particular facet of the industry. Panels should conclude by approximately 8:30. Attendance is mandatory. The events will give you the opportunity to network with fellow participants and learn from experts who can help you get your career off on the right track. You are responsible for transportation to and from these panels. The Gold Program Events page will be your hub for program events and information. Each event may be saved as a calendar invite for easy mobile access to dates, times, locations and other up-to-date information.
Production Track: Additional hands-on Saturday workshops focused on various facets of production are mandatory for Gold Production Track interns. Other interns may be able to attend select workshops, but space is limited for these events.
Academy Screenings: The Academy hosts member screenings each weekend and on Tuesdays, and we’re extending the invitation to Gold interns. These screenings are not mandatory, but you won’t want to miss them. Many are followed by Q&As with the filmmakers. Each Gold intern may bring one guest to these screenings. See membership screening guidelines for more information.
Closing Ceremony: We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, August 11 for a Gold graduation ceremony and celebration at the Academy.
Gold Survey: Over the course of this summer, we will be asking all Gold Program participants to complete a series of short surveys. These will be conducted by an outside company and any feedback you provide will be kept anonymous. By completing the surveys, you'll be helping us make the program better for this year and beyond. You will be receiving an email from Talmetrix to set up your survey account. Please complete the pre-orientation survey by June 13.
Life After Gold: In September, you’ll be paired with an Academy member as your mentor for the next eight months. You also will become a proud alumnus of the Academy's Foundation and Education programs which includes our Nicholl fellows and Student Academy Award winners. We will provide you with more information on the Academy’s programs, alumni opportunities, and other useful resources to help you begin your career in film.
You are the future of film. The future is now.
