Denzel Washington, working with Lee for the fourth time, plays a New York hostage negotiator brought in to mediate a tense situation when a mysterious criminal and his masked team take the customers and staff of a Manhattan bank hostage. Production designer Wynn Thomas, a frequent Lee collaborator, created highly authentic sets that allowed Lee to take full advantage of first-time screenwriter Russell Gewirtz’s witty script in a stylish production that keeps the audience guessing at every turn.
