This joyful film version of the Broadway smash remains an irresistible sky burst of Americana. Robert Preston recreates his Tony-winning Broadway triumph as con artist Harold Hill, who arrives in River City, Iowa, to form a boys’ band, much to the disapproval – and later delight – of town librarian Marian Paroo (Shirley Jones).

Buddy Hackett, Hermione Gingold, Paul Ford and seven-year-old Ron Howard co-star. Meredith Willson’s sassy, brassy score, which features the unforgettable “Seventy-Six Trombones” and “Till There Was You,” among other marvelous melodies, was adapted by Ray Heindorf, who received an Oscar for his work.

The film was nominated for five other Academy Awards including Color Art Direction, Color Costume Design, Film Editing, Best Picture and Sound.
