Academy Exhibition in the Grand Lobby Gallery

A companion to LACMA's exhibition "Stanley Kubrick"

The Academy's installation included original materials that shed light on Kubrick's creative process within, and yet extraordinarily apart from, the typical production practices of the movie industry.

Using Kubrick’s elaborate, multi-formatted advertising campaigns and movie posters as a structuring motif, the exhibition included photographs, production designs, Dr Strangelovescreenplay drafts, correspondence and other original documents, and advertising trailers, to bring to life Kubrick’s on-set world and the experience of being caught up in his all-encompassing creative universe.

By examining Kubrick’s minute impact on every detail of his films – from story, casting, cinematography, visual effects, design and editing to marketing – and by incorporating firsthand accounts from his key filmmaking collaborators, a fuller picture emerges of what made signing on to a Kubrick film "the Ultimate Trip."

Exhibition materials were drawn from the collections of the Stanley Kubrick Archive,  the Mark E. Blunck Collection, The Shiningion and the Academy’s Margaret Herrick Library, in collaboration with the Deutsches Filmmuseum, Frankfurt am Main and LACMA.

The Academy Salute to Stanley Kubrick and the Academy exhibition "Stanley Kubrick: The Ultimate Trip" are presented in collaboration with the exhibition "Stanley Kubrick" at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. That exhibition is organized by the Deutsches Filmmuseum, Frankfurt am Main, Christiane Kubrick and the Stanley Kubrick Archive at University of the Arts London, with the support of Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc., Sony-Columbia Pictures Industries Inc., Metro Goldwyn Mayer studios Inc., universal studios Inc. and SK Film Archives LLC.

In Los Angeles, Stanley Kubrick is co-presented by LACMA and the Academy, and has been generously supported by Steve Tisch. Additional funding has been provided by Warner Bros. Entertainment, Violet Spitzer-Lucas and the Spitzer Family Foundation.
