National Film Information Service

***Please note NFIS fee changes, effective Jan 1, 2019.

The fee-based National Film Information Service (NFIS) of the Margaret Herrick Library provides research assistance and digital reproductions for patrons who are unable to visit the library in-person. NFIS can assist with extensive research questions but is not a substitute for hiring a local researcher. Staff are unable to assess large volumes of material or make complex decisions on patron’s behalf. Requests can be made by email or letter and should be as specific as possible.

Reproductions for research are generally provided in the format of low-resolution scans. If preferred, photocopies are available upon request (with mailing fee). A $15 flat fee covers a minimal amount of staff time and up to five (5) pages of scans. Requests over 5 pages are $1 per page. More time intensive requests require a fee that starts at $35 an hour.

High resolution digital reproductions start at $45 for a 300 PPI jpeg file (or 8x10 black-and-white print), and $85 for a 600 PPI tiff file.

Mailing fees (excluding oversize and international shipping) are a flat rate of $5.

Some materials are not eligible for off-site access via digital reproduction. It is at the discretion of NFIS to determine what can be provided. Specific limits apply to scans of Special Collections papers. See Special Collections Photocopying Policy for more information.

For patrons with more general questions or questions about library holdings/searching, our e-mail reference service may be a better option. Please see the Reference Assistance tab on the About page for more information:
