“Close Encounters of the Third Kind” (1977)

Robert Swarthe is an award-winning special effects artist most notably known for his animated visual effects sequences in “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” (1979), for which he received an Academy Award® nomination in the category of Best Visual Effects. The Archive’s collection includes production elements and tests for some of his most celebrated titles, such as “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” (1977), “One from the Heart” (1982), and “The Outsiders” (1983). The Archive has preserved several of Swarthe's films, including “Kick Me” (1975), “The Unicycle Race” (1966), and several Disney home movies. Since 2009, the Archive has housed almost 500 items related to Robert Swarthe, including elements on deposit through his estate and elements made from preservation work.
