Newcomb Condee Collection

Graf Zeppelin’s Historical 1929 Flight Around the World (Preserved by the Academy Film Archive)

The Newcomb Condee Collection was donated to the Academy Film Archive in August 2004 by Mr. Condee’s surviving daughters, Alice Stelle and Lois Seed.  The collection consists of 90 reels of home movies, dating from 1926 to 1972. Most of the films were shot on 16mm film, a few on 8mm; two of the reels have sound and many have extensive intertitles. The films record the extended Condee family, consisting of Newcomb (a judge who presided in the municipal and superior courts of Los Angeles), his wife Grace, and their three daughters, as well as their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  The collection features the construction of several iconic Los Angeles buildings, the Southern California landscape, Stanford University, the family’s extensive travels in the United States and abroad, and theatrical plays put on by the Masonic Scottish Rite Players, of whom Condee was a member.
