Dalton Trumbo was a novelist, playwright, and Oscar-winning screenwriter, often remembered as one of the Hollywood Ten who opposed the House Un-American Activities Committee. The Dalton Trumbo Collection was deposited at the Academy Film Archive in August 1998 by his son, writer Christopher Trumbo. The collection consists primarily of extensive 35mm production materials relating to the 1971 anti-war film “Johnny Got His Gun.” Adapted by Dalton Trumbo from his own novel of the same name, it was the only film that Trumbo directed. After Christopher’s death, additional safety film material for “Johnny Got His Gun” was deposited at the Academy in September 2014 by Nancy Escher, trustee of the Christopher Trumbo Estate.
