Academy Commendation
FPC, Inc., the pioneering film recycling company formed
47 years ago, was presented with an Award of Commendation by the
Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on March 4, 2000, at
the organization's Scientific and Technical Awards Presentation
dinner.
The Award of Commendation, a plaque, was given "to FPC, Inc.,
under the leadership of Barry M. Stultz and Milton Jan Friedman
for the development and implementation of an environmentally-responsible
program to recycle or destroy discarded motion picture prints."
"FPC was a truly visionary company when it recognized the
need 47 years ago to keep discarded motion picture prints out of
landfills," said Richard Edlund, chair of the Scientific and
Technical Awards Committee. "Their work not only provides a
valuable service to the motion picture industry, but their intelligence
and foresight has benefited the community at large as well."
FPC, founded in late 1952 by Friedman, has destroyed or recycled
more than 330 million pounds of discarded motion picture prints.
Film that is not recycled into magnetic film stock is destroyed
by incineration for energy. The alternative method for print disposal,
by discarding them in landfills, can result in a nasty chemical
that may leach into the surrounding environment, including local
water table.
FPC's award, along with all of the other Scientific and Technical
Awards, were handed out at this year's presentation dinner at the
Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel on March 4, 2000.
