December 28, 2006 Oscar’s® Docs Arrive in NYC
New York, NY — The 2007 “Monday Nights with Oscar” series will kick off with “Oscar’s Docs: An Evening with Sarah Kernochan,” including screenings of Kernochan’s Academy Award®-winning documentaries, “Marjoe” and “Thoth,” on Monday, January 8, at 7 p.m. at the Academy Theater at Lighthouse International in New York City. The presentation, hosted by historian and journalist Perry L. van der Meer, will feature a post-screening conversation with the two-time Oscar-winning producer-director. The program will begin with a screening of the documentary short subject “Thoth” (2001), from the original print submitted for Academy Award consideration, followed by the documentary feature “Marjoe” (1972), from a new print preserved by the Academy Film Archive. Complementing the screenings will be historical footage from past Academy Awards® presentations. “Thoth” profiles Stephen Kaufman, aka Thoth, a performance artist in New York’s Central Park. Dressed in nothing more than a gold loincloth and warrior headdress, Thoth performs his one-man operas, or “prayformances,” with violin accompaniment, in what he describes as an attempt to bring divine inspiration and healing to the world. “Marjoe” tells the story of Marjoe Gortner, an extraordinarily charismatic fire-and-brimstone preacher who candidly reveals the tricks of his trade and his personal belief that religion is really just another business. “Monday Nights with Oscar” is a monthly series showcasing high-quality prints of films that have been nominated for or won Academy Awards. The Academy Theater at Lighthouse International is located at 111 East 59th Street in New York City. Tickets for the screening are $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid ID. All seating is unreserved. Tickets may be reserved by calling 1-888-778-7575. Depending on availability, tickets may be purchased the night of the screening. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
