On Native Soil (2006) |
Beverly Hills, CA — “On Native Soil: The Documentary of the 9/11 Commission Report” and “Occupation: Dreamland” will be screened on October 25 at 7 p.m. as the next installment in the 25th Annual Contemporary Documentary Series, presented by the Academy Foundation of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the UCLA Film & Television Archive. Free and open to the public, the screening will take place at the Academy’s Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood.
Narrated by Kevin Costner and Hilary Swank, “On Native Soil” recaps that day’s tragic events and underscores the 9/11 Commission’s conclusions that a lack of preparedness, an overwhelmed emergency system, “dithering” by the Federal Aviation Administration and the failure to make the terror threat a top priority combined to prevent officials from recognizing the imminence of the attacks. The film was directed by Linda Ellman, who will participate in a discussion following the screening. Ellman also produced the film, with Jeff Hays and Lenville O’Donnell.
The filmmakers of “Occupation: Dreamland” bunked down with an Army squadron for six weeks to capture a grunt’s-eye view of military duty in Iraq. Even as they question their usefulness, the soldiers display compelling composure and decency as they try to carry out confusing commands in an untenable situation. The film was directed by Garrett Scott and Ian Olds, and it was produced by Scott, Selina Lewis Davidson and Nancy Roth. Olds will be present at the screening to discuss the film.
Admission to all screenings in the Academy/UCLA Contemporary Documentary Series is free. The Linwood Dunn Theater is located at the Academy’s Pickford Center for Motion Picture Study, 1313 North Vine Street, in Hollywood, at the northwest corner of Fountain Avenue and Vine Street. Parking is available behind the building through the entrance on Homewood Avenue, one block north of Fountain. For more information, call (310) 247-3600 or (310) 206-FILM.
