Academy/UCLA Documentary Series
Spotlights the City of Angels
Beverly Hills, CA — Two non-fiction films that explore the city of Los Angeles will be screened on November 2, at 7:30 p.m., as part of the Contemporary Documentary Series, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Academy Foundation and the UCLA Film and Television Archive. Free and open to the public, the screening will take place in the Academy’s Linwood Dunn Theater.
The short film “Los Angeles” explores the psychology and aesthetic of the new cityscape of Los Angeles. Directed by Sarah Morris and produced by Matthew Brady, the film tracks the metropolis’ de-centralized plan, complex architecture and crucial role as a center of film production.
“Los Angeles Plays Itself” is a feature-length visual essay and clip-show of the countless movies that have portrayed Los Angeles, sometimes merely as background, sometimes as a character, other times as the central subject. Together these depictions weave the urban legend of the city. The film was directed and produced by Thom Andersen.
The Linwood Dunn Theater is located at the Academy’s Pickford Center for Motion Picture Study, 1313 North Vine Street, in Hollywood, at the northwest corner of Fountain Avenue and Vine Street. Limited parking is available behind the building through the entrance on Homewood Avenue, one block north of Fountain. For more information, call 310-247-3600 or 310-206-FILM.
