September 28, 2005 "Imitation of Life" to Screen for New York Audiences
New York, NY — Susan Kohner and Juanita Moore, who earned Oscar® nominations for their supporting roles in "Imitation of Life," will be on hand to discuss the 1959 melodrama when it screens on October 17, at 7:30 p.m. at the Academy Theater at Lighthouse International in Manhattan. The screening is part of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' "Monday Nights with Oscar®" series. A panel discussion with Kohner and Moore will be moderated by Foster Hirsch, author and film professor at Brooklyn College, who also will make introductory remarks. Starring Lana Turner as Lora, a struggling actress, "Imitation of Life" tells the story of Sarah Jane (Kohner), a light-skinned black woman who denies her mother, played by Moore, in order to pass for white, which results in bitter consequences. Based on a Fannie Hurst novel, "Imitation of Life" marks director Douglas Sirk's final feature film. The film also stars Sandra Dee as Lora's daughter Susie along with John Gavin, Robert Alda and Troy Donahue. This screening will feature a newly-restored print from the Academy Film Archive's collection. "Monday Nights with Oscar" is a monthly series showcasing high-quality prints featuring Academy Award®-nominated and winning films. The Academy Theater at Lighthouse International is located at 111 East 59th Street in New York City. Tickets for the screening are $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid I.D. Tickets also may be reserved over the phone by calling (888) 778-7575. Pending availability, tickets may be purchased in person the night of the screening. Doors open at 7 p.m. # # # |
