September 21, 2005 Academy/UCLA Documentary Series to Start Its 24th YearBeverly Hills, CA — Seventeen short and feature-length documentaries, including the Oscar-winning “Born into Brothels” and two other nominees, will be screened in Part One of the 2005 – 2006 Contemporary Documentary Series, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Academy Foundation and the UCLA Film and Television Archive. The series kicks off October 19, at 7:30 p.m., at the Academy’s Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood. All screenings in the series are free.
The first two films in the series transport viewers to India. In “When the Storm Came,” a group of Kashmir villagers living along the disputed India-Pakistan border remember a mass rape at the hands of Indian security forces. The impact and horror of the attack are described by those who experienced it. In “Born into Brothels,” a group of stigmatized offspring of prostitutes in Calcutta’s red light district are given cameras and taught how to take pictures. The children are able to see their world in a new way and are thus exposed to other worlds of possibilities previously unknown to them. All screenings are free and open to the public. They will begin at 7:30 p.m. and take place in the Academy’s Linwood Dunn Theater, except for the December 14 program at the IMAX Theater. Filmmakers will be present whenever possible to discuss their films and take questions from the audience. Part Two of the series will begin in January. That portion of the series will be held at UCLA’s James Bridges Theater. The Linwood Dunn Theater is located at the Academy’s Pickford Center for Motion Picture Study, 1313 North Vine Street, in Hollywood, at the northwest corner of Fountain Avenue and Vine Street. Parking is available behind the building through the entrance on Homewood Avenue, one block north of Fountain. The IMAX Theater is located at the California Museum of Science and Industry on Exhibition Boulevard at Figueroa Street. Parking is available for $5 in the lot on Figueroa and 39th Street.
