"Sayonara" for "Great To Be Nominated"

 

  “Sayonara” stars Marlon Brando and Miiko Taka in the film adaptation of James Michener’s novel about Japanese-American relations.

Beverly Hills, CA — The 1957 Best Picture nominee “Sayonara” will be screened as the final installment of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' series "Great To Be Nominated, Part Two” on Monday, August 22, at 7:30 p.m. in the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

“Sayonara,” a film adaptation of James Michener’s novel about American-Japanese relations, stars Marlon Brando, Red Buttons and Miyoshi Umeki. The film, which earned a total of 10 Academy Award® nominations, won Oscars® for Actor in a Supporting Role (Buttons), Actress in a Supporting Role (Umeki), Art Direction (Art Direction: Ted Haworth; Set Decoration: Robert Priestley) and Sound Recording (Warner Bros. Studio Sound Department, George Groves, Sound Director). “Sayonara” was also honored with nominations for Best Picture, Actor (Brando), Cinematography (Ellsworth Fredericks), Directing (Joshua Logan), Film Editing (Arthur P. Schmidt, Philip W. Anderson) and Writing – Screenplay based on material from another medium (Paul Osborn).

The 1957 Oscar-nominated cartoon short subject "Trees and Jamaica Daddy” and live-action short subject nominees “A Chairy Tale” and “City of Gold” will be screened prior to the film.

The evening's commemorative program will feature black-and-white photos from "Sayonara” on the cover.

Tickets for the screening may be purchased for $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid identification. Tickets may be purchased by mail, in person at the Academy during regular business hours or, pending availability, the night of the screening when the doors open at 6:30 p.m. Curtain time is 7:30 p.m. but the pre-show elements will begin at 7 p.m. The Academy is located at 8949 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills.
