“Great To Be Nominated” Double Feature:
“The Rose Tattoo” and “Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing”

Screening also celebrates the films’ 50th Anniversaries

 

 

“Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing” stars Jennifer Jones and William Holden in the film adaptation of Han Suyin’s autobiographical tale of romance between a Eurasian doctor in Hong Kong and a Western journalist.

Beverly Hills, CA — The 1955 Best Picture nominees “The Rose Tattoo” and “Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing” will be screened as a double-feature at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ "Great To Be Nominated, Part Two” series on Monday, August 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater. The evening will also serve as a celebration of the films’ 50th anniversaries.

Both films earned eight Academy Award nominations and each won the Oscar® in three categories. “The Rose Tattoo” took home statuettes for Actress (Anna Magnani), Art Direction – Black-and-White (Art Direction: Hal Pereira, Tambi Larsen; Set Decoration: Sam Comer, Arthur Krams) and Cinematography – Black-and-White (James Wong Howe). “Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing” won Academy Awards for Costume Design – Color (Charles LeMaire), Music Score of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture (Alfred Newman) and Music – Song (“Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing,” Music: Sammy Fain; Lyrics: Paul Francis Webster).

Anna Magnani made her Hollywood debut and took home the Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of Serafina Delle Rose in “The Rose Tattoo,” an adaptation of romanced by a truck driver, portrayed by Burt Lancaster, also received Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Actress in a Supporting Role (Marisa Pavan), Costume Design – Black-and-White (Edith Head), Film Editing (Warren Low) and Music Score of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture (Alex North).

Han Suyin’s autobiographical novel, A Many-Splendoured Thing, about the relationship between a Eurasian doctor in Hong Kong and a Western journalist, was the foundation for “Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing,” starring Jennifer Jones and William Holden. In addition to the three statuettes it won, the romantic drama also was nominated for Best Picture, Actress (Jones), Art Direction – Color (Art Direction: Lyle Wheeler, George W. Davis; Set Decoration: Walter M. Scott, Jack Stubbs), Cinematography – Color (Leon Shamroy) and Sound Recording (20th Century-Fox Studio Sound Department, Carl W. Faulkner, Sound Director).

The 1955 Oscar-nominated cartoon short subject "The Legend of Rock-a-Bye Point” will be screened prior to the films.

The evening's commemorative program will feature black-and-white photos from "The Rose Tattoo” and “Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing" on the cover.

Tickets for the screening may be purchased for $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid identification. Tickets may be purchased by mail, in person at the Academy during regular business hours or, pending availability, the night of the screening when the doors open at 6:30 p.m. Curtain time is 7:30 p.m. but the pre-show elements will begin at 7 p.m. The Academy is located at 8949 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills.
