"Great To Be Nominated" Film Series to Continue with “Sunset Blvd.”

 

In 1950 Best Picture nominee "Sunset Blvd.," Gloria Swanson (center) stars as Norma Desmond along with Erich von Stroheim (left, as Max Von Mayerling) in Billy Wilder's black comedy about the dark side of Hollywood.

Beverly Hills, CA — The 1950 Best Picture nominee “Sunset Blvd.” will be screened as the next installment in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' series "Great To Be Nominated, Part Two." Writer-director Billy Wilder’s black comedy about the dark side of Hollywood will be presented on Monday, June 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

The film, which gave silent film star Gloria Swanson a one-of-a-kind comeback role as Norma Desmond, earned a total of 11 Academy Award® nominations, including a Best Actress nomination for Swanson. “Sunset Blvd.” took home Oscars® for Art Direction – Black-and-White (Art Direction: Hans Dreier, John Meehan; Set Decoration: Sam Comer, Ray Moyer), Music Score of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture (Franz Waxman) and Writing – Story and Screenplay (Charles Brackett, Billy Wilder, D. M. Marshman, Jr.). The film also received Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Actor (William Holden), Actor in a
Supporting Role (Erich von Stroheim), Actress in a Supporting Role (Nancy Olson), Cinematography – Black-and-White (John F. Seitz), Directing (Wilder) and Film Editing (Arthur Schmidt, Doane Harrison).

The 1950 Oscar-nominated cartoon short subject "Trouble Indemnity” featuring Mr. Magoo, live-action short subject nominee “Wrong Way Butch” and live-action short subject winner “In Beaver Valley” will be screened prior to the film.

The evening's commemorative program will feature black-and-white photos from "Sunset Blvd." on the cover.

Passes for "Great To Be Nominated, Part Two" are still available at a cost of $30 for those wishing to see the rest of the series in its entirety. A $5 discount is available for those renewing their passes from Part One of the series. Inclusive of “Sunset Blvd.,” there are 8 screening dates remaining in Part Two.

Tickets for each screening may be purchased on an individual basis at a cost of $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid identification. Tickets may be purchased by mail, in person at the Academy during regular business hours or, pending availability, the night of the screening when the doors open at 6:30 p.m. Curtain time for all screenings is 7:30 p.m. but the pre-show elements will begin at 7 p.m. The Academy is located at 8949 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills.
