June 14, 2005 “Great To Be Nominated” Continues with “The Heiress”
Beverly Hills, CA — The 1949 Best Picture nominee “The Heiress” will be screened as the next installment in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' series "Great To Be Nominated, Part Two." William Wyler’s film adaptation of the Broadway play based on Henry James’ novel “Washington Square” will be presented on Monday, June 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater. In the performance for which she won her second Oscar®, Olivia de Havilland stars as Catherine Sloper alongside Montgomery Clift and Ralph Richardson (in his first American film). “The Heiress,” which earned a total of eight Academy Award® nominations, also won Oscars for Art Direction – Black-and-White (Art Direction: Harry Horner, John Meehan; Set Decoration: Emile Kuri), Costume Design – Black-and-White (Edith Head, Gile Steele) and Music Score of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture (Aaron Copland). The film also was nominated for Best Picture, Actor in a Supporting Role (Richardson), Cinematography – Black-and-White (Leo Tover) and Directing (Wyler). The 1949 Oscar-nominated cartoon short subject "The Magic Fluke,” live-action short nominee “Water Trix” and the Oscar-winning live-action short “Van Gogh” will be screened prior to the film. The evening's commemorative program will feature black-and-white photos from "The Heiress" on the cover. Passes for "Great To Be Nominated, Part Two" are still available at a cost of $30 for those wishing to see the rest of the series in its entirety. A $5 discount is available for those renewing their passes from Part One of the series. Inclusive of “The Heiress,” there are 9 screening dates remaining in Part Two. Tickets for each screening may be purchased on an individual basis at a cost of $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid identification. Tickets may be purchased by mail, in person at the Academy during regular business hours or, pending availability, the night of the screening when the doors open at 6:30 p.m. Curtain time for all screenings is 7:30 p.m. but the pre-show elements will begin at 7 p.m. The Academy is located at 8949 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills.
