"Great To Be Nominated” Film Series to Continue with “Johnny Belinda”

Beverly Hills, CA — The 1948 Best Picture nominee “Johnny Belinda” will be screened as the next installment in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' series "Great To Be Nominated, Part Two." Director Jean Negulesco’s film version of the Broadway play about a mistreated deaf girl will be shown, in a brand new print struck from the original negative, on Monday, June 13, at 7:30 p.m. in the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater. Oscar winner Jane Wyman is expected to attend and will answer questions about the film following the screening.

In her Academy Award®-winning performance as Belinda, Jane Wyman stars with Lew Ayres, Charles Bickford and Agnes Moorehead. “Johnny Belinda” received an additional 11 Oscar® nominations, including Best Picture, Actor (Ayres), Actor in a Supporting Role (Bickford), Actress in a Supporting Role (Moorehead), Art Direction – Black and White (Robert Haas; Set Decoration William Wallace), Cinematography – Black and White (Ted McCord), Directing (Negulesco), Film Editing (David Weisbart), Music – Score of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture (Max Steiner), Sound Recording (Warner Bros. Studio Sound Department – Col. Nathan O. Levinson, Sound Director) and Writing – Screenplay (Irmgard Von Cube and Allen Vincent).

The 1948 Oscar-nominated cartoon short subject "Mouse Wreckers,” live-action short subject nominee “You Can’t Win” and live-action short subject winner “Seal Island” will be screened prior to the film.

The evening's commemorative program will feature black-and-white photos from "Johnny Belinda" on the cover.

Passes for "Great To Be Nominated, Part Two" are still available at a cost of $30 for those wishing to see the rest of the series in its entirety. A $5 discount is available for those renewing their passes from Part One of the series. Inclusive of “Johnny Belinda,” there are 10 screening dates remaining in Part Two.

Tickets for each screening may be purchased on an individual basis at a cost of $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid identification. Tickets may be purchased by mail, in person at the Academy during regular business hours or, pending availability, the night of the screening when the doors open at 6:30 p.m. Curtain time for all screenings is 7:30 p.m. but the pre-show elements will begin at 7 p.m. The Academy is located at 8949 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills.
