February 7, 2005 ABC and Academy Extend Oscar® Telecast AgreementBeverly Hills, CA - The ABC television network's contract to carry the annual Academy Award® presentations has been extended for six more years, through 2014, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Frank Pierson and Anne Sweeney, co-chairman, media networks, The Walt Disney Company and president, Disney-ABC Television Group, announced today. "We are delighted to have reached this agreement with our historic broadcast partner," Pierson said. "By the end of this new extension ABC will have carried 38 consecutive Oscar telecasts, and 56 of the 61 ceremonies ever televised. Oscar lives at ABC." "The Academy Awards® stand as the preeminent awards show in the world," Sweeney said. "We're thrilled to continue our long, fruitful association with the Academy through 2014 and to continue bringing this exciting and glamorous event to our audience." The new agreement for the domestic broadcasts of the Academy Awards adds six years to the existing contract, which was scheduled to expire in 2008. International rights are governed by a separate agreement with Buena Vista International which runs through 2010. Academy Executive Director Bruce Davis described the AMPAS/ABC negotiations as "characteristically cordial." "All of us at the Academy were particularly gratified by the participation of Walt Disney President and Chief Operating Officer Bob Iger in these negotiations," Davis said. "The Academy is very protective of the Oscars, and one of the main factors that has kept us at ABC is our confidence that Bob understands and respects the things that make us the gold standard of Award Shows. He's been an important constant throughout all our dealings with the network since 1989." # # # |
