Academy's New York Screening Series to Present "The Apartment"

New York, NY - "The Apartment" moves in to New York on Monday, January 10, as the first film of the new year to be featured in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' "Monday Nights with Oscar®" series. The film, which won the Oscar for Best Picture of 1960, will screen at 7:30 p.m. in the Academy Theater at Lighthouse International in Manhattan .

Directed by Oscar-winner Billy Wilder, "The Apartment" starred Jack Lemmon as insurance agent C.C. "Bud" Baxter who tries to gain the favor of executives at his company by letting them use his apartment for their extramarital affairs. His plan appears to be working until he discovers that Fran Kubelik (Shirley MacLaine), the woman he has a crush on, attempted suicide in his apartment after her affair with his boss Jeff Sheldrake (Fred MacMurray) ended.

Both Lemmon and MacLaine received Academy Award® nominations for their leading performances in the film.

Wilder won three Academy Awards® for "The Apartment" including Best Picture, Directing and Writing (Story and Screenplay -- written directly for the screen). The film also won Oscars® for Art Direction (Black-and-White) and Film Editing.

Additional nominations included Cinematography (Black-and-White), Sound and a Supporting Actor nomination for Jack Kruschen.

The 1960 Oscar-winning Cartoon Short Subject "Munro" will screen prior to the feature presentation.

Tickets for "The Apartment" are $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid I.D. Tickets may be reserved over the phone by calling 888-778-7575. All orders will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Pending availability, tickets may be purchased in person the night of the screening when the doors open at 7:00 p.m.
