Academy's New York Screening Series to Present "Meet Me in St. Louis"

Meet Me in St. Louis (1944)

New York, NY - The 1944 Academy Award® -nominated musical "Meet Me in St. Louis" will greet New Yorkers on Monday, December 13, as the next film to be featured in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' "Monday Nights with Oscar®" series. A new print of the film from the Academy Film Archive will screen at 7:30 p.m. in the Academy Theater at Lighthouse International in Manhattan.

Brian Rose, professor of media studies at Fordham University, will host the evening. A 16mm print from the Academy Film Archive of the 1941 Oscar-nominated Cartoon Short Subject "The Night Before Christmas," featuring Tom and Jerry, will be shown prior to the feature presentation.

"Meet Me in St. Louis" starred Judy Garland as Esther Smith, one of four daughters in a suburban St. Louis family preparing for the arrival of the 1904 Exposition. The film tells the story of the Smith family and how their idyllic life could change forever when the father is offered a promotion necessitating the family's move to New York.

Margaret O'Brien, who co-starred as Tootie Smith, received a Special Award from the Academy as "the outstanding child actress of 1944" for her performance in the film.

The film received four Academy Award nominations including Cinematography - Color (George Folsey), Writing - Screenplay (Irving Brecher and Fred F. Finkelhoffe), Music - Scoring of a Musical Picture (Georgie Stoll) and Best Song, "The Trolley Song" by Ralph Blane and Hugh Martin. (The trolley may have captured the nomination, but it will be another Blane/Martin composition from the film, "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," that sends New Yorkers into the mid-December night in the perfect seasonal mood.)

The next installment of the "Monday Nights with Oscar" series will feature the 1960 Best Picture winner "The Apartment."

Tickets for "Meet Me in St. Louis" are $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid I.D. Tickets may be reserved over the phone by calling 888-778-7575. All orders will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Pending availability, tickets may be purchased in person the night of the screening when the doors open at 6:30 p.m. The Academy Theater at Lighthouse International is located at 111 East 59th Street between Park and Lexington Avenues.
