Academy's Movie Costume Exhibition to Close December 5

Costume designer Penny Rose created this late 17th-century black linen-weave frock coat, gray waistcoat, linen shirt and pirate boots costume, worn by Oscar®-nominated actor Johnny Depp's character Jack Sparrow in the 2003 film "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl."

Beverly Hills, CA - "Fifty Designers/Fifty Costumes: Concept to Character," the exhibition currently on display at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences showcasing fifty stunning costumes worn by some of the most memorable characters in recent film history, is scheduled to close on Sunday, December 5.

The exhibition celebrates the work of costume designers while detailing the extensive process they go through to bring characters to life on film.

The Fourth Floor Gallery houses the fifty original costumes, each one personally selected by the exhibiting designer from his or her recent body of work. Each costume is displayed with the original concept sketch. To further illustrate how these costumes appeared on film, photographs and film clips featuring the actor in costume accompany each item in the exhibition.

An impressive array of costumes are displayed representing all genres of film from contemporary and period to fantasy and comedic. Some of the eye-catching pieces include Elle Woods' pink "Jackie O" suit from "Legally Blonde 2," designed by Sophie DeRakoff Carbonell; the wedding gown from "Frida," by Academy Award® -nominated designer Julie Weiss; the "Spider-Man" costume, created by Oscar® -winning designer James Acheson; and the title character's costume from "Austin Powers in Goldmember," designed by Deena Appel.

Additional costume sketches, process boards, swatches and research materials are featured in the Grand Lobby Gallery, revealing the challenging aspects costume designers face to capture the essence of a character.

"Fifty Designers/Fifty Costumes: Concept to Character" is presented in association with the Costume Designers Guild. The Oscar-nominated members of the curatorial committee are Academy Governor Jeffrey Kurland, Costume Designers Guild President Dr. Deborah Nadoolman Landis and Judianna Makovsky, all of whom are represented in the exhibition.

The Academy has published a full-color companion catalogue for this exhibition. The 125-page soft-cover publication contains commentary from and a filmography for each exhibiting designer, full-color photographs of each costume on display as worn by the actor and the accompanying sketch, a forward by Kurland and an introductory essay by Landis. This special Academy publication can be purchased at a cost of $20 by mail, in person at the Academy or on the Academy website www.oscars.org.

Like all Academy exhibitions, "Fifty Designers/Fifty Costumes: Concept to Character" is free and open to the public. Gallery viewing hours are Tuesdays through Fridays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and weekends, noon to 6 p.m. However, the Academy will be closed on Thursday, November 25, and Friday, November 26, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.
