Academy Program to Focus on the Camera

Beverly Hills, CA - The motion picture camera will be the focal point of a program at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood on Thursday, December 2, at 7:30 p.m.

Presented by the Academy's Science and Technology Council, "The Camera: In Depth" will examine key developments to the motion picture camera and how those changes and enhancements have affected the art.

Visual effects Oscar ® winner Richard Edlund will be among the evening's participants, who will explain how the camera has influenced cinema history and is shaping the future as the industry moves into the digital age.

The program's additional participants include cinematographers Steven Poster and John Hora; cinematographer Steve Gainer, who is the curator of the American Society of Cinematographers' Camera Museum; Moe Shore, of Panavision; and Bill Russell from Arri.

Excerpts from films shot with some of the cameras discussed during the program will be shown, including clips from "Intolerance," which was shot with a Pathe Camera; "Oklahoma," shot with a Todd-AO 70mm camera; "Becky Sharp," shot with a Technicolor 3-strip camera, and "The Magnificent Seven," shot using a Panavision camera.

Various cameras used through motion picture history, including a Technicolor 3-strip, a Bell & Howell hand crank, an early Mitchell camera and a Blimp Fox Camera, will be on display.

Tickets for "The Camera: In Depth" are $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid identification. Tickets may be purchased by mail, in person at the Academy during regular business hours or, pending availability, the night of the event when the doors open at 7 p.m. The Academy is located at 8949 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills.
