November 16, 2004 Academy Selects Design for 77th Oscar® Poster
Beverly Hills, CA - A design by an unknown newcomer has been selected by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the 77th Academy Awards® commemorative poster. Brett Davidson, who has been on staff at the Academy for 10 years and currently serves as the organization's information systems support specialist, was competing against dozens of established artists who submitted designs for the 77th Oscar poster. Davidson's design was chosen through a blind selection process by Academy executives and members of its Board of Governors. "We looked at dozens of designs but there was something about Brett's image that we all were drawn to; it was a unanimous decision," said Academy Executive Director Bruce Davis. "It was only after we had made the decision that we found out the designer was one of our own staff. It's great for Brett to have this opportunity." A striking image, Davidson's design incorporates brilliant squares of pink, orange, green and blue as a colorful backdrop for the Oscar statuette. "I was so excited when I found out my design had been chosen," said Davidson. "Graphic design has always been my passion, so it's unbelievably gratifying that my work will be used to promote such a prestigious event." Davidson studied both film and graphic design at the University of Miami in Florida. After moving to Los Angeles in 1994, he continued his design studies at the University of Southern California while taking a job at the Academy. His work at the organization though has been in the Information Technology department, making sure that the computers that serve the Academy's thousands of databases are up-to-date and functioning smoothly. Elements of Davidson's poster design will be utilized in motion graphics, press kits and numerous other promotional materials as part of the Academy's marketing campaign for the 77th Academy Awards. In addition, 50,000 Oscar posters will be distributed nationwide beginning today. The commemorative poster will be available for purchase from today until March 14 on the Academy's website www.oscars.org/publications, or via phone at 1-800-554-1814. It will be the sixth consecutive year the poster will be offered for purchase to the public. Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2004 will be presented on Sunday, February 27, 2005, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland® and televised live by the ABC Television Network at 5 p.m. PST, beginning with a half-hour arrival segment.
