November 3, 2004 Academy's New York Screening Series to Present "Oscars® and Animation"
New York, NY - The November installment of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' "Monday Nights with Oscar®" series will focus on the genre of animated films, examining the various techniques of animation, how they are used in film and how those uses have changed over the years. "Oscars and Animation" will be presented on Monday, November 15, at 7:30 p.m. in the Academy Theater at Lighthouse International in Manhattan . The evening will be moderated by Michael Sporn, who received an Academy Award® nomination for his 1984 Animated Short Film "Dr. De Soto." Jimmy Picker, who produced the 1983 Oscar-winning Animated Short Film "Sundae in New York ," will be in attendance, as will Frank Mouris, whose 1973 short "Frank Film" won the Oscar in the same category. Both of these films will be featured during the program. Five styles of animation - cel, 3D puppet, 3D claymation, montage and cut-out, will be showcased with screenings of Academy Award-nominated and -winning films which also will trace the history of animation. The 1928 animated short "Steamboat Willie," which features the debut of the Mickey Mouse character, is one of four films that will show traditional hand-drawn cel animation. Two other Disney films featuring cel animation, the 1932/33 Oscar nominee "Building a Building" and the 1937 Cartoon Short Subject Oscar winner "The Old Mill," will be shown, as will "The Critic," the 1963 Oscar-winning Cartoon Short Subject, featuring the voice of Mel Brooks. The George Pal film "Tulips Shall Grow," which was nominated in 1942 in the Cartoon Short Subject category, will represent 3D puppet animation. "Sundae in New York " will feature 3D claymation while "Frank Film" will be an example of montage animation. "Pulcinella," an Animated Short Subject nominee in 1973, will feature the cut out animation technique. The next edition of the "Monday Nights with Oscar" series will feature a new print of the 1944 Academy Award-nominated film "Meet Me in St. Louis " on December 13. Tickets for "Oscars and Animation" are $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid I.D. Tickets may be reserved over the phone by calling 888-778-7575.
