Academy's New York Screening Series to Feature "Charly"

Academy Award®-winning actor Cliff Robertson starred in the title role of the 1968 drama "Charly."

New York, NY — The 1968 drama "Charly" will screen on Monday, September 13, at 7:30 p.m. in the Academy Theater at Lighthouse International in Manhattan. Viewers in attendance at this screening, the next installment in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' monthly screening series "Monday Nights with Oscar®," will enjoy a brand new print of "Charly" from the Academy's Film Archive.

Cliff Robertson, who won the Academy Award® for his performance in the film's title role, will attend the screening and participate in a question-and-answer session preceding the film.

Based on the novel "Flowers for Algernon," the film tells the story of Charly Gordon, a mentally retarded adult who undergoes an experimental brain operation and briefly becomes a man of superior intellect before tragically regressing to his former condition.

The subsequent edition of the "Monday Nights with Oscar" series will be held on October 18 and will feature the 1935 Academy Award-nominated drama "Alice Adams," which was directed by George Stevens. The film will be shown as part of the Academy's centennial celebration honoring the Oscar-winning director.

Tickets for "Charly" are $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid I.D. Tickets may be reserved over the phone by calling 888-778-7575. All orders will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Pending availability, tickets may be purchased in person the night of the screening when the doors open at 6:30 p.m. The Academy Theater at Lighthouse International is located at 111 East 59th Street between Park and Lexington Avenues.
