"Great To Be Nominated" Film Series Concludes with "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington"

"Mr. Smith Goes to Washington"

Beverly Hills, CA — The 1939 Jimmy Stewart drama "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" will bring to a close part one of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' "Great To Be Nominated" screening series. The film, which received 11 Oscar® nominations, will screen at the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater on Monday, August 16, at 7:30 p.m.

The "Great To Be Nominated" series, which began in May, has celebrated the pictures which accumulated the most Academy Award® nominations in all categories in a particular year, without winning the Best Picture award. The series is designed to continue in 2005, picking up where this portion ends.

The evening's program will feature the 1939 Oscar-nominated Disney Cartoon Short Subject "The Pointer," along with "Busy Little Bears," the Oscar-winning One-reel Short Subject of the same year. Selections from the Oscar-winning score composed by Herbert Stothart from "The Wizard of Oz" will serve as the curtain music.

The program's early bird bonus will be "A Day on Treasure Island," a musical short about the 1939 San Francisco World's Fair.

Tickets may be purchased at a cost of $5 each for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid I.D. Tickets may be purchased in person at the Academy during regular business hours or, pending availability, the night of the screening when the doors open at 6:30 p.m. The Academy is located at 8949 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills. For more information, call 310-247-3000, ext. 111.
