December 1, 2003 Academy's Diamond Anniversary Screening Series Comes to a Close with "Chicago"
Beverly Hills, CA - The old razzle-dazzle of the "Facets of the Diamond" screening series will conclude when the "Chicago" closing credits roll off the silver screen of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Samuel Goldwyn Theater on December 8. The 75th Academy Award®-winning Best Picture will bring the popular screening series to a close after its 18-month run. The series, "Facets of the Diamond: 75 Years of Best Picture Winners," kicked off on May 13, 2002, with a screening of "The Broadway Melody," the second Best Picture winner. The Academy saved the first, "Wings," for a special two-night screening in May 2003, when a print restored by the Academy Film Archive was accompanied by a live orchestra playing the original score conducted by Gillian Anderson. Series coordinator Randy Haberkamp, who has become known for springing surprises on his "Facets" audiences, has promised a couple of special ones for the "Chicago" screening. Footage from the 75th Academy Awards telecast, featuring two-time Oscar® winner Olivia de Havilland introducing a reunion of 59 past acting Oscar winners, will be shown prior to the film. The Oscar-winning Animated Short Film of 2002, "The ChubbChubbs!," also will be featured during the evening. The hit Eminem song "Lose Yourself," from the film "8 Mile," was named Best Song of 2002 and will serve as the program's curtain music. Tickets may be purchased, pending availability, at a cost of $5 each for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid I.D. Tickets may be purchased in person at the Academy during regular business hours. The Academy is located at 8949 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills.
