September 2, 2003 Academy's Diamond Anniversary Screening Series to Feature "Driving Miss Daisy"
Beverly Hills, CA - "Driving Miss Daisy" arrives in Beverly Hills on Monday, September 8, when the Oscar®-winning film screens at 7:30 p.m. in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Samuel Goldwyn Theater as the next entry in the organization's 75th anniversary screening series, "Facets of the Diamond." "Driving Miss Daisy" made Oscar history when it became the first, and to date only, film based on an off-Broadway play to win the Academy Award® for Best Picture. In addition, Jessica Tandy was named Best Actress of 1989 for her performance in the film and at two months shy of her 81st birthday became the oldest person to win a competitive Academy Award - a record that remains unbroken to date. Footage from the 62nd Academy Awards telecast, the first to be hosted by Billy Crystal, will precede the screening, as will the Oscar-winning Animated Short Subject of 1989, "Balance." The original trailer for "Dances With Wolves," the next film in the series, also will be shown. The film "The Little Mermaid" produced the Best Song of 1989, "Under the Sea," which will serve as the evening's curtain music. Tickets may be purchased, pending availability, at a cost of $5 each for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid I.D. Tickets may be purchased in person at the Academy during regular business hours or by mail. The Academy is located at 8949 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills.
