Academy Launches New York Film Series “Monday Nights With Oscar®” With Screening of 1938’s “You Can’t Take it With You”

New York, New York, November 19, 2002 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ “Monday Nights with Oscar” film series will begin on Monday, November 25, with a screening of the 11th film to win an Academy Award, the 1938 Best Picture winner “You Can’t Take it With You,” at the Ames Auditorium, 111 East 59th Street in Manhattan.

Part of the Academy’s celebration of its 75th anniversary, “Monday Nights with Oscar®” is a series of eight Best Picture-winning films, each representing a 10-year section of Academy Awards history. Robert Osborne, film historian, will host the screening of “You Can’t Take it With You”. Preceding the film, highlights from the second decade of Academy history (1938-1947) will be featured, including screen tests of Paulette Goddard and Susan Hayward auditioning for the role of Scarlett O’Hara in 1939’s “Gone With the Wind;” the short film “The House I Live In,” starring Frank Sinatra, which won a special Academy Award in 1945; a 1943 newsreel, “Hollywood in Uniform,” and the trailer for the next film in the series, “Hamlet” (1948). Participants will also receive a commemorative program for the evening, featuring background on the film and a four-color reproduction of the original movie poster for that evening’s Best Picture.

Each evening’s program begins at 7:30 p.m. A subscription to the film series is available by mail for $50 to the general public and $25 for students with a photocopy of official student ID. To download a subscription form, http://www.oscars.org/events/diamond/newyork.html or call 888-778-7575 for more information. Checks and money orders should be payable to The Academy Foundation.
