Annual Documentary Series from Academy and UCLA Scheduled to Begin

Beverly Hills, CA - The 20th Annual Contemporary Documentary Series, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Academy Foundation and the UCLA Film and Television Archive, will begin on October 2 at UCLA's James Bridges Theater at 7:30 p.m. Included in Part One, which runs through December 11, are five 2000 Academy Award®-nominated films. All screenings in the series are free and open to the public.

Following is the complete schedule for Part One:

  • Tuesday, October 2
    "The Man on Lincoln's Nose" (directed and produced by Daniel Raim) Academy Award® Nominee.
    "Light Keeps Me Company" (directed by Carl-Gustaf Nykvist, produced by Gudrun Nykvist-Sondell).

  • Tuesday, October 16
    "Making a Killing: Philip Morris, Kraft and Global Tobacco Addiction" (directed and produced by Kelly Anderson, Tami Gold).
    "Sound and Fury" (directed by Josh Aronson, produced by Roger Weisberg) Academy Award® Nominee.

  • Tuesday, October 30
    "Curtain Call" (directed by Chuck Braverman, produced by Braverman, Peter Le Donne, Steve Kalafer) Academy Award® Nominee.
    "Living Dolls: The Making of a Child Beauty Queen" (directed by Shari Cookson, produced by Cookson, Linda Otto, Jean Guest).

  • Tuesday, November 6
    "SOA: Guns and Greed" (directed and produced by Robert Richter).
    "Soldiers in the Army of God" (directed by Marc Levin, Daphne Pinkerson, produced by Levin, Pinkerson, Daniel Voll).

  • Tuesday, November 13
    "Spirit of Yosemite" (directed and produced by David Vassar).
    "Coming to Light: Edward S. Curtis and the North American Indians" (directed and produced by Anne Makepeace).

  • Tuesday, November 27
    "King of the Jews" (directed and produced by Jay Rosenblatt).
    "Scottsboro: An American Tragedy" (directed by Barak Goodman, co-directed by Daniel Anker, produced by Anker, Goodman) Academy Award® Nominee.

  • Tuesday, December 11 - Special screening at the IMAX Theater
    "Dolphins" (directed by Greg MacGillivray, produced by MacGillivray, Alec Lorimore) Academy Award® Nominee.
    "Galápagos" (directed and produced by Al Giddings, David Clark).

All screenings begin at 7:30 p.m. and, except for the December 11 program at the IMAX Theater, will take place in the James Bridges Theater on the UCLA campus. Filmmakers will be present whenever possible to discuss their films and take questions from the audience. Part Two of the series will begin in January.

The James Bridges Theater is located in Westwood on the northeast corner of the UCLA campus, near the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Hilgard Avenue. Parking is available for $6 in Lot 3, adjacent to the theater. The IMAX Theater is located at the California Museum of Science and Industry on Exhibition Boulevard at Figueroa Street.
