Academy Screening to Spotlight "All That Jazz"

Beverly Hills, CA - "All That Jazz," Bob Fosse's 1979 semi-autobiographical extravaganza, will be screened at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Friday, September 21, at 8 p.m., in the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater. Presented as part of the "Academy Standards" series, the screening will be followed by a panel discussion featuring members of the film's cast and crew.

Starring Roy Scheider, Jessica Lange, Ann Reinking, Leland Palmer, Cliff Gorman and Ben Vereen, "All That Jazz" follows workaholic Broadway choreographer/director Joe Gideon (Scheider) on the verge of collapse. Musical numbers and fantasy sequences are interspersed with Gideon's attempts to mend his personal relationships as his health fails and his obsession with work continues.

Among those scheduled to participate in the panel discussion following the film are Academy governor Albert Wolsky, who won the Academy Award® for his costume design; Philip Rosenberg and Tony Walton, who took home Oscar® statuettes in the Art Direction category; and the film's executive producer, Dan Melnick.

The print to be screened is one newly restored by the Academy Film Archive and 20th Century Fox, featuring the film's original stereo soundtrack. (Though the film was originally mixed in stereo, only eight of the original release prints were in stereo. All other prints in distribution, as well as the video and laser disk releases, feature mono sound.)

"All That Jazz" won a total of four Academy Awards®: Art Direction (Rosenberg, Walton; Set Decoration: Edward Stewart, Gary Brink); Costume Design (Wolsky); Film Editing (Alan Heim); and Music - Original Song Score and its Adaption or Adaptation Score (Ralph Burns). It received an additional five nominations: Actor in a Leading Role (Scheider), Cinematography (Giuseppe Rotunno), Directing (Fosse), Best Picture (Robert Alan Authur, Producer) and Writing - Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen (Authur, Fosse).

Tickets for "All That Jazz" are $5 for the general public, $3 for Academy members. They may be purchased in advance by mail, at the Academy during regular business hours beginning September 4, or, if still available, on the night of the screening when the doors open at 7 p.m. The Academy is located at 8949 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills.
