July 23, 2001 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: John Pavlik - (310) 247-3000 Academy Elects 15 Governors; Four Have Never Served BeforeMock is First Governor of new Documentary BranchBeverly Hills, CA - Four new members have been elected by their branches to the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, nine incumbent members have been returned and two governors who had previously served on the Academy's board have been brought back for additional service. Their terms will begin August 1. Freida Lee Mock was elected the first governor of the newly-created documentary branch. Two governors were elected in the actors branch because of the resignation of Gregory Peck, who chose not to fill out the remaining year of his three-year term. That position, filled by Tom Hanks, will be up for re-election next year. Incumbent Kathy Bates was returned to the board for a second three-year term. In addition to Hanks and Mock, the other two newcomers to the board are Curtis Hanson, directors branch; and Mark Johnson, producers branch. Returning to the board after twelve years is past president Richard Kahn, public relations branch; and, after a one-year absence, Carl Bell, short films and feature animation. Incumbent governors returning to the board in addition to Bates are Marvin March, art directors; Conrad Hall, cinematographers; Robert Rehme, executives; Tom Rolf, film editors; Arthur Hamilton, music; Donald Rogers, sound; Jonathan Erland, visual effects; and Hal Kanter, writers. Three governors represent each of the Academy's 13 branches and are elected for staggered terms, so that each branch elects or re-elects one governor each year. The new documentary branch will be represented by only a single governor, who will be up for re-election every three years. Governors whose positions were not up for re-election and who continue on the board are: actors branch, Ed Begley, Jr.; art directors, Jeannine Oppewall and Albert Wolsky; cinematographers, John Bailey and John Toll; directors, John Frankenheimer and Michael Mann; executives, Roger L. Mayer and Lew Wasserman; film editors, Dede Allen and Carol Littleton; music, Alan Bergman and Charles Bernstein; producers, Samuel Goldwyn Jr. and Saul Zaentz; public relations, Cheryl Boone Isaacs and Marvin Levy; short films and feature animation, Jon Bloom and June Foray; sound, Douglas Greenfield and Don Hall; writers, Fay Kanin and Frank Pierson; and visual effects, Richard Edlund and Bill Taylor. ###
