Academy to Premiere Restored "The Lion in Winter" in London April 22

Beverly Hills, CA - A newly-restored print of "The Lion in Winter," which received seven Academy Award® nominations and won three Oscars®, will be given its world premiere for British members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Sunday (April 22), at an invitation-only screening at the Curzon Mayfair Theatre in London.

Peter O'Toole, who was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of King Henry II, will participate in a cast-and-crew discussion prior to the screening, as will producer Martin Poll, editor John Bloom and cast member Jane Merrow, who played Princess Alais. Cinematographer Douglas Slocombe also is expected to attend.

In attendance from the Beverly Hills headquarters of the Academy will be Academy President Robert Rehme, Executive Director Bruce Davis and Special Events and Exhibitions Coordinator Ellen M. Harrington. Steven Gaydos, executive editor/managing director of Variety, will introduce the film and moderate the panel discussion. Sandy Lieberson, chair of the London Screening Committee of the Academy, also will attend.

A reception for the participants and guests will be held prior to the film program at the Washington Mayfair Hotel.

"The Lion in Winter" was nominated for seven Oscars in 1968 - Best Picture, Actor, Actress, Costume Design, Directing, Original Score and Adapted Screenplay. Katharine Hepburn won the Oscar® for Best Actress, John Barry for Original Score and James Goldman for the screenplay.

The print to be shown was restored by Sony Pictures Entertainment and MGM Studios in collaboration with the Academy Film Archive.

The program in London is being sponsored by the Renaissance London Chancery Court Hotel and Sony Pictures Entertainment.
