October 30, 2000 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: John Pavlik - (310) 247-3000 Academy Distributes Studio Promotion Guidelines for 73rd Academy Awards®Beverly Hills, CA - Guidelines limiting the ways in which film companies may "campaign" for Academy Awards during the upcoming "Oscar® season" have been sent by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to studio and distribution company marketing departments. Academy Executive Administrator Ric Robertson said the guidelines are similar to last year's, with most of the changes designed to clarify existing regulations. One specific change from last year is that a member may not be sent both a DVD and a videotape of the same motion picture. "The implementation of these guidelines over the last few years has virtually eliminated the unnecessary and purely promotional material that used to get mailed to our members," Robertson noted. Violations of the Academy's guidelines are usually punished by a loss of tickets to the Academy Awards Presentation, he said, but serious violations could be punished by loss of eligibility for Oscar consideration. ###
