18 Scientific Achievements to be Considered for 73rd Academy Honors

Beverly Hills, CA - Eighteen scientific or technical achievements were selected Wednesday (9/13) by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Scientific and Technical Awards Committee to be further considered for Academy Awards® in the upcoming 73rd annual competition, Committee Chair Richard Edlund announced today.

"These achievements are announced in advance so that those with claims of prior invention or with similar technology can advise us of their situation so that we can review whether they should also be included in our consideration," Edlund said. Deadline for such notification is 5 p.m., Friday, September 29.

The methods or devices selected by the committee for further consideration, and the individuals or companies submitting them, are:

  • LAD - Laboratory Aim Density; Eastman Kodak Company
  • Life Guard 100, 200 and 400 Ground Fault Current Interrupters; SMS/PGS
  • Loud Trailers, Measurement Technique, Equipment Design and Control Program Implementation; Dolby Laboratories, Inc.
  • Millennium XL Camera System; Panavision, Inc.

Demonstration of selected achievements will be conducted on Tuesday, October 24, in the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater. Awards Adminis-tration Director Richard Miller said the committee will meet on December 6 to vote award recommendations to the Academy's Board of Governors, which will make the final decisions. The Scientific and Technical Awards will be presented at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel on Saturday, March 3, 2001.
