Annual Academy/UCLA Documentary Series Starts in October

Beverly Hills, CA - Part One of the 19th Annual Contemporary Documentary Series, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Academy Foundation and the UCLA Film and Television Archive, will begin on October 3 at UCLA's James Bridges Theater at 7:30 p.m. Included in Part One are four 1999 Academy Award®-nominated films. All screenings in the series are free and open to the public.


Following is the complete schedule for Part One:

October 3, 2000

"The Wildest Show in the South: The Angola Prison Rodeo" (directed by Simeon Soffer; produced by Jonathan Stack). Academy Award nominee.

"Beyond the Mat" (directed by Barry W. Blaustein; produced by Brian Grazer, Michael Rosenberg, Barry Bloom, Blaustein).


October 17

"Just a Wedding" (directed by Beverly Shaffer; produced by Gerry Flahive).

"American Hollow" (directed and produced by Rory Kennedy).


October 24

"The Last Guy to Let You Down" (directed and produced by Rolf Gibbs).

"Mr. Death: The Rise and Fall of Fred A. Leuchter, Jr." (directed by Errol Morris; produced by Morris, Michael Williams, David Collins).


November 14

"Jews and Buddhism: Belief Amended, Faith Revealed" (directed and produced by Bill Chayes, Isaac Solotaroff).

"Eyewitness: The Legacy of Death Camp Art" (directed and produced by Bert Van Bork). Academy Award Nominee.

"Tak for Alt: Survival of a Human Spirit" (directed by Broderick B. Fox, Sarah Levy, Laura Bialis; produced by Bialis).


November 21

"Genghis Blues" (directed by Roko Belic; produced by Adrian Belic). Academy Award Nominee.

"Buena Vista Social Club" (directed by Wim Wenders; produced by Ulrich Felsberg, Deepak Nayar). Academy Award Nominee.


November 28

"Growing Up Fast" (directed and produced by Joanna Lipper).

"Smoke and Mirrors: A History of Denial" (directed by Torrie Rosenzweig; produced by Rosenzweig, Elise Pearlstein).


December 5

"The Art of Norton Simon" (directed by Davis Guggenheim; produced by Charles Guggenheim).

"Keepers of the Frame" (directed by Mark McLaughlin; produced by Randy Gitsch).


December 12 - (This screening begins at 7 p.m. at the IMAX Theater.)

"Island of the Sharks" (directed by Howard Hall; produced by Michele Binder Hall).

"Olympic Glory" (directed by Kieth Merrill; produced by Frank Marshall, Scott Swofford).

"Wolves" (directed by David Douglas; produced by Pietro Serapiglia, Goulam Amarsy).


All screenings, except for the December 12 program at the IMAX Theater, begin at 7:30 p.m. and will take place in the James Bridges Theater on the UCLA campus. Filmmakers will be present whenever possible to discuss their films and take questions from the audience. Part Two of the series will begin in January.

The James Bridges Theater is located in Westwood on the northeast corner of the UCLA campus, near the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Hilgard Avenue. Parking is available for $6 in Lot 3, adjacent to the theater. The IMAX Theater is located at the California Museum of Science and Industry on Exhibition Boulevard at Figueroa Street.
