August 29, 2000 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Leslie Unger - (310) 247-3000 Pre-Historic Monsters of "The Lost World" on Screen at the AcademyBeverly Hills, CA - A newly-restored print of the 1925 stop-motion animation classic, "The Lost World," will be screened at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Friday, September 15, at 8 p.m. Presented as part of the "Academy Standards" series, the silent film presentation will include live musical accompaniment by the six-piece Robert Israel Orchestra. Bessie Love, Lewis Stone, Wallace Beery, Lloyd Hughes and Arthur Hoyt star in Marion Fairfax's adaptation from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's novel. Beery portrays Professor Challenger, who leads the expedition to prove his claim that prehistoric creatures are still living on a South American plateau. Produced under the supervision of Earl Hudson, with dramatic direction by Harry O. Hoyt, "The Lost World" features one of the earliest examples of stop-motion animation created by special effects legend Willis O'Brien. Through painstaking efforts, the film archivists at the George Eastman House have restored long-lost footage and have created a version of the film that is close to that originally released in 1925 at the Astor Theater in New York. Tickets for "The Lost World" are $5 for the general public, $3 for Academy members. They may be purchased in advance at the Academy during regular business hours, by mail, or on the night of the screening, if still available, when the doors open at 7 p.m. The Academy is located at 8949 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills. For more information, call 310-247-3600. ###
