The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will continue its year-long residency at the Metrograph Theater in New York City with upcoming programming in September and October showcasing high quality film prints from the Academy Film Archive, home to one of the most diverse and extensive motion picture collections in the world.  The monthly series features onstage conversations with filmmakers and scholars of motion pictures, tributes, newsreels, rarely seen clips from past Oscar® ceremonies, and home movies from Hollywood legends and some of the most influential filmmakers and artists. The series will continue with a special screening of “The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez,” a horror film trailer retrospective, and a tribute to the late George A. Romero.  Additional upcoming programming to be announced.

Current programming lineup as follows:

“THE BALLAD OF GREGORIO CORTEZ”
New DCP Restoration
Monday, September 18 at 7PM at Metrograph Theater

A revisionist western set in turn-of-the-last-century Texas and directed by Robert M. Young (“Short Eyes,” “Alambrista!,” “Rich Kids”), “The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez” features Oscar-nominated actor Edward James Olmos in the title role as a Mexican-American farm worker who goes on the run after he’s slapped with an unfair murder charge, trailing six hundred Texas Rangers behind him. Young’s film breathes life into a legendary episode of immigrant resistance to nativist bullying.  “The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez” was restored in 2016 by the Academy Film Archive and the project was supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Producer Michael Hausman, production designer Stuart Wurtzel and costume designer Hilary Rosenfeld will be in attendance for a post-screening Q & A moderated by film journalist Joe Neumaier.

IT CAME FROM THE VAULTS
Monday, October 30 at 6:45PM at Metrograph Theater

The Academy and Metrograph will present “It Came from the Vaults,” a program of classic 35mm horror trailers and advertising material, courtesy of the Packard Humanities Institute Collection at the Academy Film Archive. Introduced by journalist Michael Gingold, former editor-in-chief of Fangoria, the program will include trailers from horror classics such as “Suspiria,” “Psycho,” “Scream” and more.

Monday, October 30 at 8:45PM at Metrograph Theater

The Academy will host a special screening of Romero’s science fiction-horror-action film “The Crazies,” about the effects of the accidental release of a military biological weapon upon the inhabitants of a small American town, starring Lane Carroll, Will MacMillan and Harold Wayne Jones.
