Special guest: producer-director Joe Berlinger, in conversation with director Ondi Timoner (DIG!, WE LIVE IN PUBLIC).

Presented as part of the Academy’s series spotlighting recent film festival standouts. Academy Award-nominated   documentary filmmaker   Joe Berlinger   offers a sweeping

Mugshot of James "Whitey" Bulger

and revelatory look at notorious Boston mob boss James “Whitey” Bulger, who vanished from sight at the turn of the millennium only to be caught by police in Santa Monica in 2011. With Bulger’s 2013 trial underpinning the film’s narrative, Berlinger examines accusations of deep-seated corruption within America’s law enforcement and legal systems. Intermingled with first-person accounts from Boston locals whose families were terrorized by Bulger – the real-life inspiration for Jack Nicholson’s Frank Costello in the Academy Award-winning Best Picture The Departed – the film offers an unflinching look at the criminal underbelly of a major American city and the complex network of vested interests and conspiracies that sustain it.

2014, 107 minutes, color | Directed by Joe Berlinger.
