It’s no secret that Walt Disney and his “Nine Old Men,” as he termed his then-youthful group of key animators, inspired many of those who eventually found careers in motion picture animation. What’s not as well known are the conscious, dedicated efforts of these men and others to personally hand down the unique art of animation to new generations through direct training at CalArts and other programs.

In an onstage panel discussion, James Baxter, Andreas Deja, Pete Docter and Eric Goldberg will spotlight the mentors who fostered their professional development, as well as provide insights into their individual approaches to their art. The celebration will include clips from the masters’ work that inspired each of the panelists, and from the panelists’ work reflecting that inspiration.

James Baxter oversaw “star” performances as the supervising animator for Belle in Beauty and the Beast, Quasimodo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Spirit in Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, as well as the animation sequences in Enchanted.

Andreas Deja, one of the top animators of his generation, brought to life characters as diverse as Gaston in Beauty and the Beast, Scar in The Lion King, and Lilo in Lilo & Stitch.

Pete Docter received Oscar® nominations for Best Original Screenplay for Toy Story, Best Animated Feature Film for Monsters, Inc., and Best Animated Short Film for Mike’s New Car.

Eric Goldberg served as the character designer and supervising animator for Genie in Aladdin, and as a director of Pocahontas as well as the “Rhapsody in Blue” and “Carnival of the Animals” segments in Fantasia 2000.
