The Academy Film Archive celebrates Home Movie Day (see below for the Los Angeles afternoon event) with an evening screening of specially selected home movie footage from Hollywood’s Golden Age.
The 16mm home movie craze extended to Hollywood film professionals, including stars and directors who captured not only their families at home and on vacation, but behind-the-scenes activities on their sets as well. The Academy Film Archive has preserved a wide variety of such films and will present a selection of excerpts from the personal collections of such luminaries as Alfred Hitchcock, Richard Brooks, Jean Negulesco, Esther Williams and Steve McQueen.
In addition to these rare glimpses of celebrities at work and play, the evening will feature additional footage of Hollywood and its environs, reflecting the changing landscape of Southern California. It includes scenes of Hollywood Boulevard and the surrounding area from 1947, the construction of the Los Angeles City Hall in 1926, Disneyland’s opening on July 17, 1955, the Tournament of Roses Parade from 1930 to 1950, and more.
“Hollywood Home Movies” is an opportunity to take a step back in time and to celebrate the contribution that amateur photography makes to the history and cultural fabric of L.A.
Home Movie Day is a celebration of amateur films and filmmaking held annually on the second Saturday in August at many local venues worldwide.
Home Movie Day events provide the opportunity for individuals and families to see and share their own home movies with an audience of their community, and to see their neighbors’ in turn. It’s a chance to discover why it’s important to care about these films and to learn how best to care for them.
Film check-in from 11 a.m.–3 p.m.
Screenings from noon–4 p.m.

“There’s no such thing as a bad home movie. These mini-underground opuses are revealing, scary, joyous, always flawed, filled with accidental art and shout out from attics and closets all over the world to be seen again. Home Movie Day is an orgy of self-discovery, a chance for family memories to suddenly become show business. If you’ve got one, whip it out and show it now.”
