Stanley Kramer’s exciting drama about a pair of handcuffed convicts on the run was a breakthrough film in Hollywood’s portrayal of race relations, with stars Sidney Poitier and Tony Curtis each earning their first Best Actor nomination. The film received nine nominations overall including Best Picture, Supporting Actor (Theodore Bikel), Supporting Actress (Cara Williams), Directing (Kramer) and Film Editing (Frederic Knudtson), and won for Cinematography – Black-and-White (Sam Leavitt) and Writing – Story and Screenplay – written directly for the screen (Nedrick Young).
