The Boys of Baraka

Directed and produced by Heidi Ewing, Rachel Grady
At-risk boys from Baltimore’s dead-end streets are sent to a progressive educational institution in rural Kenya where, away from ubiquitous drug use and rampant crime, they eagerly respond to educational opportunities that more fortunate youths often take for granted.  Focusing on three kids who are winningly candid, earnest and intense, the film challenges society’s willingness to brand them and their peers “throwaways” just because they grew up in dangerous, disadvantaged neighborhoods.  35mm.  84 mins.
