The Devil and Daniel Johnston
Directed by Jeff Feuerzeig
Produced by Henry S. Rosenthal
Once called the greatest living songwriter by Kurt Cobain and counting hip musicians like the members of Sonic Youth among his friends, Daniel Johnston is an artist whose art shows and underground tapes of original songs regularly sell out. He is also a manic-depressive whose life (medicated with and without the help of prescriptions) has been filmed by himself and others for more than 20 years. The filmmakers mine this rich trove of material, examining the line between creativity and madness and recording a life of accomplishment, achievement, and sorrow. 35mm. 109 mins.
