Synonymous with his witty and stylish celebrity caricatures that appeared in the New York Times from the 1950s until his death at age 99 in 2003, artist Al Hirschfeld developed and perfected his signature style decades earlier when he worked for the publicity and art departments of numerous American movie studios. The Academy presents the first exhibition to examine these Hollywood years by showcasing nine decades of film art from the 1920s on, focusing exclusively and uniquely on the artist's work related to motion pictures.  Featured are more than 50 drawings, paintings, posters and movie ephemera, with a special emphasis on Hirschfeld's unique interpretation of British performers and film makers.  This delightful exhibition showcases Hirschfeld's remarkable ability to translate character and humor into lines in motion.

The exhibition runs at the Lyttleton Circle Foyer at the National Theatre  from Tuesday the 21st of June, 2005, through Monday, August 15 2005 .  Admission is free.  The National Theatre is situated on the South Bank of the Thames, next to Waterloo Bridge .  There is a large car park under the building, and spaces cost £6 after 5 p.m. On-street parking in the area is controlled up to 8.30 p.m.  The nearest tube station is Waterloo, or Embankment Station is just a short walk over the river.
