Presenting the premiere of a newly restored print from the original 55mm negative of
Rodgers and Hammerstein's

CAROUSEL

Academy Gold Standard Series
Hosted by film critic Stephen Farber
Friday, April 22, 2005 at 8 p.m. in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater

Carousel
is the first of only two films ever produced in the short-lived Fox process called CinemaScope55 (the other was The King and I). It originally began production in both 55mm and 35mm CinemaScope, but after seeing the early rushes from a location shoot in Maine, studio chief Darryl F. Zanuck was impressed with the 55mm and ordered production on the 35mm version stopped.

This restoration is presented in the original CinemaScope aspect ratio of 2:55 to 1, with a fully restored original 4-track stereo soundtrack—marking the first time since the original roadshow presentation that the film has been seen it its complete widescreen frame and original stereo soundtrack layout. (Subsequent releases of the film featured an optical track, slightly cropping the picture to 2:35 to 1.)

The Academy screening will be the world premiere of this restoration. Because of element condition, the picture was restored completely digitally at 4K resolution by Cineric, Inc. in New York City. Audio restoration services were provided by Audio Mechanics and DJ Audio in Los Angeles.
